This  feature in our newsletter, inspired by the questions we have received over the years from interested readers, will answer your questions about astronomical issues. If you have a question about astronomy, please forward it to us at mira@mira.org.

Susan Lowell asks:

Where can people find houselights and other kinds of outdoor lights/fixtures that reduce light pollution?

Ileene Franks, MIRA board member, responds:

There is an extensive write-up at the International Dark-Skies organization's webpage (http://www.darksky.org/ida/manuf.html). It includes not only descriptions of the type of lights, but actually mentions some manufacturers by name. It's not so much the light, as where it is directed.

A member of the ASCC asks:

I'm a member of the Friends of MIRA. Why don't I get the mailings from the Astronomical Society of the Central Coast (ASCC)?

Dr. Bruce Weaver, Director of MIRA, responds:

The ASCC does operate under the MIRA umbrella. The ASCC uses MIRA facilities for their meetings and some of their other events and, when interacting with the public, are furthering the public education goals of MIRA. Of course, we recommend that ASCC members join the Friends of MIRA, but it is not required to participate in the club activities. The ASCC has separate dues, $12, which, legally, are tax-deductible contributions to MIRA, and are used for ASCC events and projects.
