Maren Christensen (right) works with MIRAs Director
Dr. Bruce Weaver to configure a new spectrograph for use in the Weaver Student
Observatory, and for her science project. Many thanks to JoAnn Novoson and Barbara Parades
for their volunteer hours at Broadway Bingo, which resulted in this donation from the
Boosters of Salinas Schools to buy the spectrograph. See caption on facing page for
description of images below. (Photo by Laura Cohan) .

Red part of the spectrum of Venus observed by Maren
Christensen and Bruce Weaver at the Weaver Student Observatory on 23 February 1999, during
the remarkable conjunction of Venus and Jupiter. Also shown is a tracing of the intensity
of the spectrum as a function of wavelength (color). The dip at column number 50 is due to
atoms of sodium.
