Large Mirror Donated to ASCC

Florence Meeker, longtime Friend and MIRA volunteer, recently donated to the ASCC a complete 17.5" f/4.5 Newtonian optics set. The mirror is in brand-new condition and has never been mounted in a telescope; it was acquired by Ralph Meeker shortly before he passed away. ASCC member Paul Franks is coordinating a project to mount these optics in a Dobsonian telescope for use at public star parties. Our thanks to Mrs. Meeker for this generous gift.

Many Thanks

Gordon Jones, Chairman, Board of Directors

We are grateful to our many local friends and supporters. I need to thank you all for your continuing contributions of time, money, and supplies. We have consistently been helped by the National Pro-Am Youth Fund and their generous donations over the years have significantly buoyed up our programs, particularly the educational aspects of the MIRA mission. Their latest contribution, for a electronic camera for the Weaver Student Observatory, is another example of their commitment to the youth of our community.

You have read earlier of the contribution of Mrs. Wanda (Richard) Hamming and we are pleased that we will name the new astronomy at the corner of Second and Eighth in Marina (old Ft. Ord) in honor of Professor Hamming.

I also wish to thank those generous Friends who responded to Dr. Weaver’s letter by contributing to our year-end appeal.

My brother travels from Stanford to hear our public lecture series and is constantly amazed that we have such a large following at science-related lectures and activities. His amazement follows, I believe, from our generous, sophisticated, and dedicated Friends!

Thank you all for your continuing support.
