36-inch Telescope back in Service

Labor Day weekend saw a flurry of activity at Chews Ridge as MIRA astronomers and Dr. Frank Melsheimer of DFM Engineering installed the freshly recoated secondary mirror and refurbished focusing assembly on MIRA’s research telescope. The new mirror coating should reduce scattered light and allow fainter objects to be imaged. The improved focus housing and cell assembly permit better focusing and more accurate alignment of the telescope’s optical elements.

The 36-inch telescope, minus its secondary mirror, points due north as
Drs. Weaver and Melsheimer prepare to reinstall the secondary assembly.

Dr. Bruce Weaver’s look of concentration is mirrored in the secondary
mirror as he and Dr. Frank Melsheimer adjust the mirror cell.
The two men are wearing surgical rubber gloves to prevent
contamination of the fresh aluminum coating on the secondary mirror.
